let's go become to sandy real quick. still a hurricane. category one hurricane. maximum winds 80 miles per hour moving off to the northwest at 13. so remains intact. you can see the satellite signature not as impressive as it was 24 hours ago when it was emerging off the coast of cuba but this is still a very strong storm and as it pushes to the north and west, it is forecast to interact with what we call a little short wave, some much colder air and as it does so, that will reenergize as it gets up into the mid-atlantic. that is why we're concerned. time frame for us as the storm gets closer will be the second half of sunday, monday and tuesday. we'll be just fine today. we'll have no issues tomorrow. this will be the second half of sunday, monday and tuesday when things will start to fall apart. that will be gusty wind around here, likely locally very heavy rain as well. let's do some local forecasting as well. we're doing fine this morning.

mix of hurricane and winter storm. although the murk is projected to make landfall along the new york-new jersey shore on tuesday, the d.c. area will feel the effects in the coming days with the possibility of hurricane force wind and heavy surf already being felt along parts of the u.s. as sandy barrels her way towards the region. >> we are looking for tropical storm-force winds along the coast beginning tonight and dangerous surf conditions over the next couple of days. we can't emphasize enough to keep people out of the water. the wind will be very strong. you will have lots of people affected. just a big mess for an awful lot of people. >> reporter: now, as sandy churns off the coast and heads up to the d.c. region, people are bracing for whatever she may bring and, of course, the big concern, power outages. power companies are making preparations for hundreds of thousands of potential outages

across eastern pennsylvania and much of maryland and virginia here. that is that fog that i mentioned and we've got an easterly flow here. our wind are out of the east pushing across the ocean. that is why we have this little maritime layer and it will keep temperatures realtively cool. that is a cold front out in indiana. that will be player in our forecast as we get into the weekend. we are concerned about hurricane sandy. maximum winds 58 miles per hour with sandy here as it pushes off to the north and west at about 13 right now t remains a very formidable hurricane, very powerful. they've got tropical storm warning and watches extending up into the carolinas now. this will continue to track often for the north and north and west over the next couple of days. i think our weather will start to break down during the day on sunday. we'll probably start to get some rain showers in here and then the main event as it were would likely occur during the day on monday and tuesday. just look at the latest guidance. it looks a little more ominous

for us. i want to emphasize that this track could change. it has changed several times in the past southeasterly days so nothing is set in stone here. but. -- it has changed several times in the past several days so nothing is set in stone here. saturday at 5:00, notice the storm still to our south. that is the cold front that. cold air, when it interacts with this tropical air will energy the system right where we don't want it to. watch the motion here. we are sunday morning at 11:00. starting to get the bands of rain. notice the eye, the center of circulation still well to our south. and as i mentioned, the latest guidance is trying to put the center right up to the bay of delaware here early monday into tuesday and that would be very problem at being for us. that would mean lots and lots of heavy rain and gusty wind around here. it could still be a category one hurricane or at least the

her -- barreling her way towards the east coast. our area utility companies are also preparing for sandy. both pepco and bg & e are planning for hundreds of thousands of potential outages. that is not good. workers are now on stand-by. pepco says they have 400 contractors ready plus an additional 150 holiday crews and bg & e says they have 500 contractors. so already getting ready for the power outages. >> yeah. one of the big issues will be that the wind field will expand as the storm gets closer. i'm afraid the damage will be widespread. remember with the derecho, it was fairly localized t could be here up to new york city, out to the west y you said in this area, at this point, you didn't think we would get hurricane force wind? >> i don't think it is likely we'll get hurricane force wind here in the immediate metro area but we could get close.
